FOR YOUR HEALTH
December 2009

Its now officially the holiday season! At this time of year every one revs up into high gear and holiday stress becomes a concern. Everyday you deal with stress; it’s a part of life. The important thing to remember about stress is that it can be either good or bad. Everyone has those days where life is a little crazy and you feel tension in your whole body. At the end of the day as you go to bed you need to relax, let the tension and stress go. When you don’t let out that energy your body ends up holding the stress. Eventually this stress shows up as things like acid reflux, chronic muscle tension, insomnia, or even heart disease.

Why does this happen? To put it simply, every stress causes your body to release hormones that rev up your body the same way that pressing on the gas petal revs up your car. If you keep stimulating the hormone without going anywhere or doing anything then your body stays in the revved up state.

This is where most people get into trouble because although mental or emotional stress can stimulate hormone release, mental or emotional activity does not bring your body back down. Physical exercise is the activity that brings your body back to its resting metabolism. So the number one way to reduce or manage stress is physical activity.

Sometimes when you come to our clinic Dr. Ismail and Dr. Clarke ask what’s going on at work or at home (especially during the holidays) because it helps to predict how quickly you will improve after an adjustment. In our clinical experience, we find that the spine and nervous system doesn’t work as well in patients that have poor stress management skills. Often for chronically stressed patients, the chiropractic adjustment acts like a reset button for their body. An adjustment will help to decrease the muscle tension, stiffness and improve nerve function, which in turn will improve your body’s reaction to stress. However, an adjustment does not take away the source of the stress, only its affects on your body.
